Miguel Soler-Roig

Traces of Memory

First as a child, I was collecting memories: from my family and friends, and from artworks that I liked when I visited the galleries with my parents. Especially I was ardent about my grandfather’s albums with photographs of his everyday life and travels, but also of his professional studies as a medical doctor and surgeon.

My grandfather, José Soler-Roig (1902-1999), was a renowned doctor in Barcelona and passionate patron of art who was fortunate to establish numerous relationships and friendships with artists and notable people from the world of culture, among others Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Juan Miró, Misia Sert, Jean Cocteau, Tamara de Lempicka, Peggy Guggenheim and Coco Chanel.

The result is a tree diagram of personal connections in the world of art, literature, fashion, and high society that extends through the 20th century for several generations. This network of connections allows me to delve into his world and generate a series of black and white pictures with unprecedented perspectives, imaginary narratives, and their memories.

For this ongoing project, I contact people close to me (friends, relatives, people from the art world), which I think have a remarkable resemblance to each of the historical characters. Then I stimulate identification and relationships of intimacy, to involve them and get a portrait as truthful as possible. Halfway between reality and fiction, I recreate invisible stories, fictive memories from another era that only its protagonists could have lived.

In Nostalgic Memory of my Life Before Birth I recover the brightness of a time gone by and bring to the present my interpretation of lights and shadows from different relational angles to preserve it for the future. The viewer with his fantasy becomes an accomplice of humanity: If our memories were capable of recovering everything we had lived, nostalgia couldn’t be necessary.
